CONVERSATIONS AT CAAM- JUSTICE CANDACE D. COOPER (RET.)
Justice Cooper, currently a private mediator, served almost 28 years on the bench before retiring in 2009 as a Presiding Justice of the California Court of Appeal (DCA). First appointed to the Municipal Court (1980), elevated to the Superior Court (1987), and appointed to the DCA (1999) she became the thids African American woman to serve on that court.
A Los Angeles native, and graduate of the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law, Justice Cooper is an outspoken advocate of diversity in the bench and bar. She is the second black and second woman to serve as President of the California Judges Association. Active in legal education, she is the recipient of humerous awards, including Outstanding Trial Jurist from the LA County Bar Association and Judge of the Year from theLangston Bar Association. Justice Cooper will be interviewed by Ronald E. Lewis, secretary of the CAAM History Council. |
